With a population of around 1,500,000, the Afar people are traditionally nomadic, moving here and there to find food and water for their herds of desert-adapted sheep, cattle, and goats.Īn ari, the term used to refer to their shelter, is constructed using flexible sticks with mat as cover. Rainbow for the Future does its work in the northeastern part of the country, in Danakil Dessert of Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea, where the Afar tribe lives. They are very far removed from western living and very different from Ethiopians who live urban lifestyles. All of these ethnic groups live very traditional lifestyles, raising cattle and goats and practising agriculture. The Surma tribe and Karo tribe also live in this region. Both men and women engage in body modification by using thorns to scar the skin. Part of this ceremony includes whipping the backs of women and the women are proud of the scars left by the whip. Hamar men do a bull jumping ceremony as a coming-of-age rite. The ceremony takes place in June and Bodi men spend several months eating high-calorie foods to put on as much weight as possible before the judging takes place.Īnother southern Ethiopia tribe is the Hamar. The Bodi tribe lives in the same area as the Mursi and is renowned for a ceremony in which they choose the fat man of the year. The Mursi women still wear lip plates and the Mursi engage in body painting for a variety of reasons, including healing. They have their own language and practise a religion that falls into the category of animism. With a population reportedly around 7,500, they live a very tribal lifestyle. Some of the most interesting Ethiopian tribes live in the southern part of the country. They live their traditional lifestyle and seem to be content to stay away from the world at large. Many groups are nomadic and some do not have much if any contact with the rest of the world. Some are very small, with only a few hundred people, while others have populations in the millions. It is very hard to determine the exact number of Ethiopian ethnic groups. The Oromo is the largest tribe in the country. They are mostly Christian, members of the Ethiopian Orthodox church. The Amhara people live in the Addis Ababa area and are very involved in governing the country and in fostering the economy.

It’s a simple mechanic that takes only a bit of time to get the basic hang of, but then only a Tribes master can take full advantage of it.Most of the population belongs to the Amhara or Oromo tribes. The hills on the maps are spaced specifically so that you can then land in the next downward slope and continue skiing, building up even more speed. When you reach the next hilltop, you right-click to turn on your jetpack, sending you careening into the air at great velocity. You’ll go faster and faster, easily building enough momentum to slide right up the upward slope of the next hill. Now that it’s a feature built into the series, it works like this: when you’re on a downward slope you hold down the spacebar to start skiing. As we mentioned, when skiing was a glitch it allowed players to go faster than they were supposed to and created cumulative momentum. With skiing, however, it becomes an endlessly fun and useful mode of transport. This means you can do one big jump before you fall back to earth.

Instead of corridors or alleyways, the Tribes maps are mostly a series of rolling hills.Įverybody in Tribes has a jetpack with limited fuel. For those who don’t know what the heck Tribes even is, imagine a sci-fi shooter that looks a bit Halo-ish (but its aesthetic precedes Halo), but what sets it apart from most other shooters, other than the skiing and jumping, is the wide-open outdoor environments. The main difference is that it will be a free-to-play game where you can buy loadouts if you wish. So much so, that I didn’t see anything new that stood out, so really it feels like Tribes 2 HD, which will probably make Tribes veterans happy. I played Tribes: Ascend recently at QuakeCon and for those wondering if the old Tribes has come back, I can say that yes, it definitely has.
